Nature Tourism: Puerto Rico

in Forest
The island of Puerto Rico in the northeast Caribbean Sea has much to offer to the nature lover. Gorgeous beaches, clear blue waters and green-carpeted mountains all beckon those who are subject to the lure of tropical climes and natural beauty. There are misty peaks rising out of lush rain forest and bays sparkling with bioluminescent creatures and an amazing array of fauna and flora, some of which can only be found In Puerto Rico.

El Yunque National Rain Forest is one of the most impressive natural features of Puerto Rico. Located in the eastern part of the island, El Yunque is managed by the US Forest Service, making it it the only rain forest under its jurisdiction and management. The stunning rain forest is home to many species of animals and plants and is coursed by streams, waterfalls and crystal-clear pools. The upper regions of the mountains contained in the park are populated with dwarfed versions of plant species specially adapted to the wet climate present high in the forested peaks, leading to the nickname of dwarf forest or cloud forest. There are hiking trails throught the park and camping is permitted, though you had better have watertight gear as it is very damp in the park. There are cabins and lodging near the park in the surrounding area.

The bioluminescent bay on the island of Vieques, which lies 8 miles of the coast of the main island, is an amazing place to visit in the dark of a new moon when millions of phosphorescent microorganisms can be seen lighting up the waters with a bluish-green glow. It is possible to view the eerie but spellbindingly beautiful phenomenon by either kayak or by guided boat trips. There is nothing more other-worldly feeling than taking a swim amongst these fascinating and magnificently glowing creatures which respond to motion, creating a quite psychedelic effect.

For a comfortable and luxurious home base while seeing the islands natural wonders, Hilton Puerto Rico hotels and resorts are offering a Puerto Sparkle promotion this winter, with discounts on rooms, food and other amenities. The world-renowned Caribe San Juan Hilton hotel is included in the special offer which runs through January 31st, 2011.
